Amesbury Town Council has given the green light for the construction of a new boardwalk on the banks of the River Avon at Lords Walk. Local company Bawden Contracting Services Ltd will carry out the work this Autumn.
Lords Walk, a local beauty spot popular with walkers and anglers, is prone to flooding and erosion. Following advice from Natural England and the Environment Agency, Amesbury Town Council decided to set funds aside to improve the route by providing a boardwalk along an 18 metre stretch of the riverbank.
The new boardwalk will be constructed by Bawden using environmentally friendly composite decking. This is manufactured in Germany from recycled plastic and supplied by Hahn Plastics Ltd. It will be positioned to allow the chalk stream alongside the River Avon to follow its natural course and eventually join the main river, whilst ensuring safe access is maintained. Part of the construction includes handrails along the length of the boardwalk and ramped access for wheelchair users and buggies.
Bawden’s Mark Edwards commented: “As a local company we are very pleased to be involved in this project, which will ensure Lords Walk can be enjoyed throughout the year. The boardwalk will provide safe access regardless of the conditions underfoot and will protect the sensitive ecosystems that exist along this beautiful stretch of the River Avon.”
