Possible Car Parking Charges

We are all aware that some car parks in the smaller towns are currently free of charge.  Wiltshire Council is carrying out a review to harmonise charges across the county from 12 July to 3 September 2010.  Please visit http://consult.wiltshire.gov.uk/portal for the online consultation or email consultation or email transportplanning@wiltshire.gov.uk or write to Sustainable Transport Group, Wiltshire Council, County Hall, Trowbridge, BA14 8JD.

Planning Outcomes for Tesco Sites

As you are aware the South Area Planning Committee met last night and a number of decisions were reached.  We have been advised as follows:

Three separate applications effecting Amesbury were discussed and decided upon.

1.       A proposal for 13 residential properties on a narrow stretch of land between Butterfield Down and Porton road. ( next to the new flats built recently by the Baptist church).

This was refused for the reason of over development of the site.

2.        Tesco Petrol Station. After a lengthy debate this was eventually refused.  It was felt that the layout of the petrol station on the site was poor and would cause problems.  It was also agreed if this did get passed, a condition would be in place so it could only operate 7am-10pm not on a 24hr basis. There may be re-submission of a revised planning proposal in the future.  It was also noted that there was plenty of land adjacent to this site which could be used to accommodate a petrol station more easily!

3.      Tesco A1 Grocery Store. This application was to alter original planning consent already granted.  Two parts to this application:

a.   Changes to materials used in the construction of the store these were as follows:

  • Less glass frontage more timber cladding
  • No longer install a wind turbine.
  • Fit 6 ‘windcatchers’ to the roof of the store in place of the originally proposed wind turbine.
  • Larger roof windows to be installed.

The windcatchers provided the most cause for debate but eventually this part of the application was passed.

b.  Change in store delivery hours.  As we all know Tesco was granted planning permmission after a long government enquiry and part of the permission granted included several conditions imposed by the Secretary of State. One of these conditions was the restricted delivery hours.  The Planning Committee upheld the Secretary of State’s original decision and refused the change in delivery hours.  There may be an appeal against this by Tesco.
